International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 26th June every year is observed as International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Drugs list which are included in abuse and dependence are Alcohol Cannabis (weed, pot, Ganja, Marijuana, dope) Heroin (Opioids- oral, injectable, cough syrups) Stimulants like Amphetamines (Meth, Crystal Meth, Ice, and Speed) Cocaine (crack, rock, coke) Hallucinogens (LSD, Acid, Trips) Ecstasy and Anabolic steroids Above list of drugs are increasingly used by youths and early adulthood for recreational activities. This age group is highly susceptible for abuse and dependency on drugs affecting them lifetime. In recent survey( Feb 2018) by National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre (NDDTC) of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in India – approximately 16 crore Indians are alcohol users, 3 crores are cannabis users and 8.5 lakhs are heroin users. It is definitely affecting their education and work, increasing aggression and crime rates in the society Drugs are affecting physically, emotionally, cognitively, financially, socially. At physical level- there are increasing road accidents as most drive rash, losing control in driving while they are intoxicated. There is increase rate of HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, liver damage, brain damage, brain stroke, paralysis, lungs affected like COPD, emphysema, nerves damage, weight loss, anorexia. At emotional level- anxiety, restlessness, depression, aggression, increased suicidal rates among youths, harming others, paranoia, hallucinations. Due to drug abuse their thinking, concentration is affected, impairment in decision making, affecting judgement, unable to understand what is right and wrong for them in life. This leads to school college drop outs, academic deterioration, spending most of the time in using drugs. This leads to work impairment- losing job. Financially they are affected leading to thefts, increasing crime rates and hence drug trafficking. Drug abuse leads to complete change in personality- making them to be socially isolated, away from family friends, not willing to listen to anyone leading to denial and deterioration in life. Death rates among youngsters are increasing due to this drug abuse. Health for Justice. Justice for Health This year's 2019 theme highlights that justice and health are two sides of the same coin when it comes to addressing drug problems. It is very important that we understand the severity of drug abuse which is affecting not only person individually – but affecting the families of drug addicts, affecting society as well and leading to loss of harmony. It is essential that we identify and help people around us suffering from addictions to drugs, those suffering from physical emotional issues due to addiction. With help of individual and group counselling therapy, family therapy, family support, medications during detoxification process, anticraving medications, music art therapy we can help to fight addiction and relieve their life in better way.
